The short version: you can browse the entire phrasebook, play audio and download countries without an account, and without us storing anything about you. Signing in is optional and only exists so your saved phrases follow you between devices.
No account, no sign-up, and we don't store any personal information about you. Two things still happen, and you should know about both:
To work offline and remember your preferences, the app keeps the following in your browser's own storage. It never leaves your device, and clearing your browser data removes it:
Signing in uses Google Sign-In. We receive your Google account identifier and display name; we never see your password. Once signed in, the following is stored in our database (Google Cloud Firestore) so it can sync across your devices:
One thing to be aware of: the "this phrase worked" marks are public. They exist so other travellers can see which phrases work in practice, and any visitor can read the totals. They are linked to an account identifier, not to your name or email, and nothing else you do in the app is public.
We use Google Analytics to understand how many people use Pocket Parrot and which phrases are actually useful. It records things like the pages and screens you open, roughly where in the world you are (country or city level, from your IP address), your device and browser type, and when you play a phrase — including which phrase and voice. Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser to recognise return visits.
We use this to decide which countries and phrases to add next. We don't use it to identify you personally, we don't sell it, and it isn't linked to your saved phrases or your account. If you'd rather not be counted, any browser-level tracking blocker or "do not track" extension will stop it, and the app keeps working exactly the same.
Pocket Parrot carries no advertising today. We may add unobtrusive travel-related recommendations in future. If that happens, this page will be updated before it goes live, and never inside the phrase card you show to people.
Our phrases are drawn from established travel phrasebook sources, including Wikivoyage (CC BY-SA), and checked as carefully as we can before publishing. They are written for everyday, polite use by a visitor.
Native speakers are reviewing every phrase, country by country, and this happens gradually alongside adding new languages rather than all at once. Until a phrase has been through that review, treat it as a good-faith translation rather than a verified one. We intend to mark reviewed phrases in the app so you can see at a glance which have been checked. If a phrase reads oddly, or would land badly in a real conversation, please tell us at hello@pocketparrot.app and we will fix it.
Pocket Parrot isn't directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 13.
You can sign out at any time from Settings, and remove downloaded content with "Remove all offline data" in the same screen. If you'd like the data attached to your account deleted entirely, email us and we'll remove it.
